Every Entrepreneur Can Get More Organized
I want to put down a popular notion — that not everyone can be organized. Some argue that it is just too complicated and time consuming to organize your life. Older employees (usually men) make the excuse that they just have too many demands to focus on something that they have lived a good while without anyway. “You aren’t going to change me now” many of them will say.
The fact is that these individuals do not want to devote the time and energy to saving substantially more time and energy over the course of their lives. It is always the up front effort that is lacking in someone who refuses to change, adapt, and improve. Any good investor knows that it takes money to make money.
It takes time and energy to make more of it for yourself on a daily basis.
This is my goal. I want everyone reading this to be able to improve their life in a way that will make them feel better on a daily basis. I want all of us to get more done. To improve our conversations. To improve the number of tasks we get done in a day. To improve the time we have with loved ones. Put simply, I want us all to improve upon ourselves by making the most of the day, which will in turn make our writing better and faster.
This can be achieved through proper organization, and by focusing on small nuances of self-improvement. Organization provides more time to complete tasks, more time to learn to play an instrument, more time to coach your son’s football team, and more time for anything else that you feel you simply cannot get to yet. There will be less confusion in your business, and more intended action.
6 Tips to Get Organized
Now, as I was saying, I have compiled 6 principles that, if done properly, will improve the productivity of anyone. To my knowledge, it has never failed. I have seen it done numerous times, and I have been able to see life-changing actions through the implementation of these 6 principles.
I have seen a man who, after implementing these principles successfully, suddenly found the time to finish building the shed he started in his backyard two years prior. I have seen an employee who suddenly was not distracted by his phone whenever he was in a conversation anymore. I have seen a woman who finally had time to pick up a hobby, and started to smile in significantly greater abundance throughout the day. I have seen a man who was struggling to keep his job, but after these principles entered his life he became a rock star at work and has since received a promotion.
These six steps have made me a better entrepreneur. The results are different, but they are not varied. Organization improves the quality of our life, the quality of our work, the quality of our team, and the quality of our self. If this is what you want (and I can’t imagine a reason why anyone would not want to try to achieve those things) then keep reading, and let’s find ways to implement these principles into your life:
1. When you’re in a conversation, be in the conversation.
- How many times do other people ask you to look them in the eye, or to pay attention to them when you’re speaking to them? Are you distracted? Are you looking at something on your phone? Are you daydreaming about your next big book idea? It seems to be common practice in today’s society that our attention is constantly taken away from what is right in front of us. If you are going to talk to others, then give them the courtesy of having your full attention.
2. Find a method of accountability that works for you, and use it.
- If you truly want to be organized then you need to hold your feet to the fire. You can’t be lazy about taking action in this endeavor. It will not work, and you will be unlikely to ever getting around to accomplish it. Organization is action. Finding a method of accountability is as simple, or complicated, as finding a system of delivery that works for you.
3. Stay connected without disconnecting from those around you.
- It is very important to stay connected in every meaning of the word. We all live very busy lives. We have many different responsibilities that pull at us. We struggle with finding the right mix of how to spend our time. We too often either end up neglecting our duties in our business, or neglect our connections to the people we love.
4. Get rid of all distractions from the task at hand.
- One of the most difficult things to accomplish, even though we all try, is staying on task. In the world we live in there are so many different distractions that can take us away from what we need to get done and who we want to connect with. That’s why that book sits in the metaphoric desk drawer for years.
5. Make use of every minute you have.
- Don’t waste time. So much work is neglected because employees do not want to get to do it. So much work is put off because it is not due for many days in the future. What ends up happening is stuff either does not get done, or it ends up in a quality that is significantly less than it should be.
6. Keep it simple.
- Do not over-complicate processes. Do not give too many absolutes to your readers. Let there be some room for the imagination, and let your statements breathe. And don’t perform overkill on simple tasks that must be done every single day. Keeping it simple will help you to remember how it should be done, and it will help you remember the overall structure and process of whatever it is you’re organizing.
There it is — my secret of entrepreneurial success. Organization, to me, is success. If you can achieve it then you will not only be happier, but you will be better off in the end.
