The right app can make tax season a lot easier. It can reduce your time and increase the amount of your refund. Of course, having the right app is not enough – you also have to know how to use it.
(Side Note: You could hire someone to do your taxes but unless you have a complicated situation then it may not be worth it. Tax experts have a tendency to almost always take the conservative side of every tax situation. Know that going in and if you choose to use an expert make sure they are going to have your best interests in mind instead of just collecting your money and protecting themselves legally.)
Now, whether you are going to hire someone to do your taxes or you are going to go about it yourself does not matter for this article. You still need to be extremely organized to make the most out of tax time. You want your taxes to take as little time as possible, and you want as much money coming back to you as possible. I’m pretty sure the majority of Americans can agree with that. This article is going to give you 6 apps that could help you speed up your tax process this year and maximize your refund. These apps are:
- Turbo Tax
- H&R Block
Note: Credit Karma offers an awesome new free way to file your taxes online, but they do not have an app yet. You can check out our review on their service here.
Did you know that you can file your taxes through the IRS website for free just like you do with popular tax software like Turbo Tax or H&R Block? Well its true you can. The only problem is that this only work with very simple tax filings. If you want to limit the amount you pay in tax, or if you want a big refund, or if you have a business that needs to be reported on your personal taxes then this option won’t work for you. Still, if you can file a simple tax return then you should be aware that this is an option and that there is an app for that.
#2 Turbo Tax
Turbo Tax by Intuit is one of the most popular ways to file more complicated tax returns without seeking expert help. They now have an app you can complete your taxes from. If you are planning on using Turbo Tax but don’t have the time to slow down and get to a computer then you should check it out. It is worth noting that you likely won’t be able to maximize your refund if you aren’t taking the time to go over your receipts and deductions, which doing your taxes on the go kind of discourages. That is, unless you have kept mobile records all year…
Evernote is a great way to keep track of your receipts throughout the year. It keeps them all in one place and you don’t have to worry about a shoebox. You will easily have access to your receipts, any deduction reminder notes you’ve made throughout the year, or even the tax forms you wanted to make sure you filled out this year. Evernote is so versatile that you can easily manage the whole process. This is a way that might make doing your taxes on the go make sense.
#4 H&R Block
H&R Block is another popular do it yourself method of filing your taxes. They also provide expert analysis and advice through their forums, telephone, and live chat. You can get access to all of this through their app. Add in the fact that as of 2017 H&R Block has teamed up with IBM’s Watson supercomputer to help maximize your refund and limit your liability, and this is a more intriguing method of filing your taxes by the minute.
IDonatedIt does exactly what you think it does. The app keeps track of everything you donate throughout the year to help maximize your deductions as you give to your church or other charities. This is the best way we have found to make sure you keep track of your donations throughout the year in case you lose some of your forms.
Shoeboxed is another way to easily keep track of your receipts throughout the year. They are a bit more detailed about keeping track of the receipts than Evernote is because is this is what their app focuses on. If you use Evernote properly then you don’t need Shoeboxed, but it could be a good match for the right person.
So what apps should you use? That really depends on you. While you can’t go wrong with any of these apps we encourage you to find the right combination that will maximize your use of the apps to improve the speed of your taxes while lowering your tax liability.
